Cerebrovascular accidents take place when a vessel is
either obstructed or ruptured causing strokes, cerebral infarcts or brain
haemorrhages.
It is one of the most common pathologies in men and
women over the age of 50, regardless of their race or nationality.
Symptoms
1. Reduction in or lack of sensation and strength in the
legs, arms or half of the body.
2. Lack of sensation in half of the face, which can
sometimes extend to the side of the head.
3. Numbness of half of the tongue and lip.
4. Difficulty in pronouncing and emitting words and
sounds.
5. Difficulty swallowing.
6. Inability to blow or whistle.
7. Movement disorders, with a loss of balance.
8. Reduction or loss of eyesight in one eye.
9. Seizures, which are one of the most common symptoms
of strokes or obstructions of small vessels. They tend heal themselves within a
few hours and do not leave any lasting effects however, we should always be
vigilant because they can sometimes be a precursor to greater and more
incapacitating strokes.
10. Intense migraines, which are recognised as an excruciating
amount pain that has never been experienced before.
11. Loss of consciousness.
Lastly, I want to remind everyone that the symptoms of strokes present themselves very suddenly and that the speed in which they are recognised and acted upon can help save a life.
