HEALTH ADVICE

HEALTHY FOODS FOR DIABETICS.
We will be classifying foods in accordance to their glycaemic index.
The glycaemic index shows the speed by which a particular food elevates blood glucose levels. The higher the glycaemic index, the higher the blood glucose levels. Foods with low glycaemic levels will be apt for diabetics.

FOODS WITH LOW GLYCAEMIC INDICES.
RICE.
Wild rice and black rice have the lowest glycaemic indices. Brown and basmati rice have a moderate glycaemic index, whilst the remaining types of rice have a high glycaemic index.

BEANS.
White, black and pinto beans have a low glycaemic index.

CHICKPEAS, LENTILS AND KIDNEY BEANS.
These three have a low glycaemic index.

SWEET POTATOES.
Sweet potatoes have a moderate glycaemic index however; potatoes and yucca have a high glycaemic index.

PASTAS.
Pasta, such as spaghetti, made of durum wheat and cooked al dente has a moderate glycaemic index.

BRAN BREAD.
Bran bread has a low glycaemic index.

CEREALS.
Sugar free whole grain cereals have a moderate glycaemic index.

VEGETABLES.
Practically all vegetables have a low glycaemic index, thereby making them apt for diabetics.

SPICES.
Spices such as pepper, cinnamon, oregano, thyme, rosemary, ginger, curcuma, etc. have a low glycaemic index.

FRUITS
The majority of fruits have a low glycaemic index except bananas, kiwis, pineapples and mangoes, which have a moderate glycaemic index, notwithstanding cooked bananas have a high glycaemic index.

NUTS
Nuts, almonds and pistachios have a low glycaemic index.

MEATS, EGGS, FISH AND SHELLFISH, CURED HAM.
All of these foods have a low glycaemic index.

MILK AND CHEESE
They both have a low glycaemic index.

OILS (Olive and Sunflower oil)
Both types of oil have a low glycaemic index.

CHOCOLATE.
Dark chocolate, with more than 70% of cocoa, has a low glycaemic index.

Cold meats and fats have a low glycaemic index however, they are not recommended to diabetics, as they already tend to suffer from cardiovascular diseases.

CARNES, HUEVOS, PESCADOS Y MARISCOS, JAMON CURADO.

LECHES Y QUESOS.
Índice glucémico bajo.

ACEITES (Aceite de oliva y girasol).
Índice glucémico bajo.

CHOCOLATE.

ENDOMETRIOSIS. PAINFUL MENSTRUATION AND INFERTILITY.

Endometriosis is defined as the emergence of tissue of the endometrium or internal layer of the uterus, in other places aside from the uterus. The most common places in the body where the tissue emerges are in: the Ovaries, Vagina, Rectum, Urinary Bladder, etc. The inflammation and bleeding that takes place in the uterus during menstruation, also happens in the places where the tissue of the endometrium is implanted.
Between 10 to 15% of fertile women suffer from Endometriosis and it is the cause behind 60% of cases of infertility or inability to have children.
The symptoms begin from their early menstruations and identifying them early could change the live of those that suffer from it.

WARNING SYMPTOMS.
PAIN.
An intense incapacitating pain throughout menstruation that prevents the sufferer from completing basic tasks. It usually starts in early menstruations, and it is a warning sign when it is permanent every month. It is a type of pain that prevents suffers from completing basic functions such as going to school or to work as well as requiring continuous pain relief. Another warning sign is experiencing pain when urinating, defecating or when having sexual intercourse.

INFERTILITY.
We have to explore the possibility of the patient having Endometriosis when a woman suffers from infertility or is unable to fall pregnant, as this condition causes 60% of cases of infertility. This condition causes the malfunctioning of the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries.

DIAGNOSIS.
A quick and effective diagnosis is essential in order to ensure that a patient begins treatment as soon as possible.
A gynaecological examination and an ultrasound are the first tools that we should use to diagnose this pathology even though, the collection of a tissue sample through a laparoscopy (a minimally invasive surgical procedure) would provide a confirmed diagnosis.

TREATMENT.
The treatment for this disease is medical, surgical and involves taking medication to treat the pain and suppress hormone production in the ovaries, etc.
Surgical treatment ranges from a laparotomy (surgery where the tissue of the endometrium is cleaned from the organs where they are located) to a total hysterectomy (removal of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes).

Lastly, it has been found that adhering to a number of things would help to manage Endometriosis. These measures include maintaining a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, such as those present in fruits and vegetables, do exercise, maintaining adequate levels of Vitamin D and avoid ingesting hormone filled meats.

ENDOMETRIOSIS.

CONTUSION OR BUMP TO THE HEAD. WARNING SYMPTOMS.

When we refer to contusions or bumps to the head, we refer to traumas that range from mild to severe and that tend solve themselves. A small and painful inflammation emerges in the affected area, even though there are symptoms sometimes that suggest that a deep structure in the brain could be affected, which would mean that a doctor would have to be seen urgently.

These symptoms are:
1. An intense cluster headache that it extends throughout the head.
2. An inexplicable dizziness that starts from the moment of the fall and gets progressive worse.
3. Vomiting and nausea.
4. Drowsiness or fatigue without prior tiredness.
5. Seizures. This symptom can emerge at the moment of the fall or after it.
6. Incontinence with relaxation of the sphincters, which in older people can happen for up to a month after the fall.
7. Memory loss. The patient does not remember how the fall occurred.
8. Disorientation. The patient does not know where she/he is and it is usually linked with memory loss.
9. Photopsia or perception of seeing lights or stars.
10. Otorrhagia or bleeding from the ears.
11. Unconsciousness. The patient experiences a complete loss of consciousness.

Every time that there is a contusion or a bump to the head, the recommendations to follow will always be:
  • Keep an eye out for these symptoms in case they present themselves during the first twenty four to forty eight hours after the fall.
  • Maintain a period of constant of observation the patient, trying to always make sure that they respond to small stimuli when they are sleeping, such as speaking to them and always ensuring that there is an interval of time of thirty to sixty minutes.

These measures of observation are crucial for small children as they are sometimes incapable of showing symptoms that are easy to detect in older children or adults.
